Diagnose First โ Then Fix
Before randomly trying fixes, identify what's actually slow. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and check the Performance tab. Is your CPU at 100%? RAM maxed out? Disk running at 100%? Each problem has a different fix.
Software Fixes (Try These First)
Restart Your PC Properly
Not shutdown โ actual restart. Windows shutdown hibernates memory state. Restart clears everything. Do this first, always.
Scan for Malware
Malware is the #1 hidden cause of slow PCs. Run Windows Defender full scan or Malwarebytes free scan. Let it complete fully โ don't cancel halfway.
Disable Startup Programs
Every installed app wants to start with Windows. Task Manager โ Startup Apps โ Disable everything except antivirus and critical drivers.
Free Up Disk Space
Windows slows dramatically when your drive is over 85% full. Run Disk Cleanup as Administrator and delete Windows Update files โ often frees 5-15GB instantly.
Update Windows and Drivers
Outdated drivers cause mysterious slowdowns and crashes. Check Windows Update AND manually update GPU drivers from NVIDIA/AMD website.
Check for Overheating
Laptops especially throttle CPU speed when hot. Download HWMonitor and check temperatures under load. CPU over 90ยฐC = thermal throttling. Clean your vents with compressed air.
Disable Visual Effects
sysdm.cpl โ Advanced โ Performance Settings โ Adjust for best performance. Removes animations, shadows, and transparency that waste GPU resources.
Run SFC and DISM
Corrupted system files cause random slowdowns. Open PowerShell as Admin and run: sfc /scannow. Then: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Takes 15 minutes but fixes deep Windows corruption.
Adjust Power Plan
Balanced power plan throttles CPU to save battery. Switch to High Performance in Power Options for maximum speed โ especially important for laptops plugged in.
Disable SysMain Service
On SSDs, SysMain (Superfetch) causes unnecessary disk reads. services.msc โ SysMain โ Disabled. Can reduce disk usage by 30-50% immediately.
Hardware Fixes (When Software Isn't Enough)
Upgrade to SSD
If you have an old HDD, upgrading to an SSD is the single biggest performance improvement possible. Boot times go from 2 minutes to 15 seconds. Apps open 5x faster. Cost: $50-80 for a good 500GB SSD.
Add More RAM
If Task Manager shows RAM consistently above 80%, you need more. 8GB is the minimum in 2026 โ 16GB is recommended. Check your laptop's specs first to confirm RAM is upgradeable.
Clean Thermal Paste
Laptops 3+ years old often have dried thermal paste causing overheating and throttling. Replacing it with quality paste like Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut can reduce temperatures by 15-20ยฐC.
Check Hard Drive Health
Failing HDDs cause extreme slowdowns. Run CrystalDiskInfo free tool โ if it shows Caution or Bad status, back up immediately and replace the drive before it dies completely.
Fresh Windows Install
Nuclear option but most effective. Back up your files, download Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft, and do a clean install. A PC that took 5 minutes to boot will boot in 15 seconds after this.
